This presentation will provide an evidence-based overview of the assessment and management of shoulder instability in athletes, with a focus on the key factors that influence treatment decisions. It will explore the role of patient-specific risk factors, advanced imaging, glenoid bone loss, and the on-track/off-track concept in guiding contemporary management. Current surgical options, including arthroscopic Bankart repair, remplissage, and bony augmentation procedures, will be discussed alongside rehabilitation and return-to-sport considerations to help clinicians optimise outcomes for athletic patients.

Mr Shahbaz Malik

BSc (Hons), MB ChB, MSc (Orth Engin), LLM, FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Mr Shahbaz Malik is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, specialising in shoulder, elbow and knee surgery. His practice focuses sports injuries, joint preservation, reconstruction and replacement, with particular expertise in advanced arthroscopic surgery and the management of athletes.

Shahbaz is the Research Lead for the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA), President of the Midlands Knee Society, Assistant Training Programme Director for the Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme (BOTP), and Education Lead for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in the West Midlands.

He has a strong academic and research portfolio, with interests in shoulder instability, ligament reconstruction, meniscal preservation and cartilage restoration. He has authored more than 85 peer-reviewed publications including RCTs, several book chapters and an orthopaedic textbook, and regularly presents at national and international scientific meetings. He is an Editor for BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders and serves as a reviewer for several leading orthopaedic journals.

In recognition of his contributions to orthopaedic research and education, Mr Malik became the first British surgeon to receive the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Young Scholars Memorial Fellowship Award in 2024. He was subsequently awarded the prestigious ISAKOS Global Travelling Fellowship in 2025 - one candidate per continent, reflecting his commitment to international collaboration, education and advancing sports orthopaedics.
