

Dr Jon Houghton is one of the UK's most senior and respected specialists in sport and exercise medicine and rheumatology. He has extensive experience in elite sport and regularly consults for multiple Premiership teams, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the Rugby Football Union (RFU), the UK Sports Institute and Olympic athletes. He worked at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, for 8 years, where he led the lower limb rehabilitation unit before moving into full-time sports and private practice. He joined Fortius Clinic in 2016, where he is the Elite Sport Service Lead. He previously served as Chair of the Royal College of Physicians' Elite Sport Committee, as well as the inaugural Elite Sport Lead for the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine.
Jon has a specialist interest in tendon pathology, bone stress injuries, hip and groin pain, and inflammatory arthritis. In 2017, he established a complex lower limb tendon clinic alongside Jarrod Antillock and the surgical team at Fortius Clinic, which regularly treats national and international athletes. He also leads an elite bone stress clinic, utilising the latest imaging and medical therapies to accelerate recovery from bony injuries. His broader expertise includes upper and lower limb overuse injuries, running injuries, pars fractures, adolescent overuse injuries, hip and groin pain, exercise-induced leg pain and injury rehabilitation. His rheumatology interests include bone stress injuries, gout, inflammatory spinal conditions, and inflammatory joint conditions affecting young and athletic people.
Dr Jon Houghton has worked with the Football Association of Wales since 2010 and has served as Chief Medical Officer since 2013, including at UEFA Euro 2016, UEFA Euro 2020 and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. He has been Lead Doctor for Surrey County Cricket Club since 2015, overseeing four County championship-winning seasons (2018, 2022, 2023 and 2024), and has also served as doctor to the Oval Invincibles, winners of The Hundred in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
