Professor Dr Pieter D’Hooghe is the Chief Medical Officer and Senior Consultant in Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery at the Fortius Clinic in London, UK. He specialises in sports traumatology of the lower leg, with a focus on the arthroscopic treatment of athletic foot and ankle injuries. He speaks 7 languages and holds a Master’s in Sports Medicine, a Master’s in Tropical Medicine, and an MBA in Sports Management.
He is the editor of 9 textbooks on sports injuries of the lower leg and has authored more than 50 book chapters and over 185 peer-reviewed academic publications. Over the last decade, Pieter has successfully delivered medical coverage as Chief Medical Officer at Aspetar Hospital for major sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the AFC Asian Cup, and World Championships in athletics, gymnastics, handball, cycling and swimming.
As an ISAKOS Executive Board Member and Chairman of the ISAKOS Sports Medicine Committee, he leads an international panel of experts in the field. As Associate Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Cornell University and Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota (Mayo Clinic), he is actively involved in orthopaedic research and education while delivering lectures worldwide.
Pieter also serves as an Orthopaedic Consultant for 9 UEFA Champions League football teams in Europe, two in the USA and four in Asia. Additionally, he serves as Co-Chair of the Medical Commission of the European Club Association (ECA) and the Football Doctors Network (FDN).
Professor D’Hooghe is the current UEFA Team Physician 2026 Course Director.
