Dr Mikel Sánchez is an internationally renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon and a pioneer in Arthroscopic Surgery, Regenerative Medicine and Orthobiologics. After studying medicine at the University of Bordeaux, he completed his specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology in Vitoria-Gasteiz. He was involved in the early development of Arthroscopic Surgery in Spain and Europe, collaborated with the Leeds–Keio working group, and has contributed to the design of surgical techniques and instruments for ligament reconstruction and other orthopaedic procedures.
He is internationally recognised for his pioneering work on Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and its application to Musculoskeletal Medicine. Mikel’s clinical and translational research has advanced biological treatments for cartilage, tendon, ligament, muscle, peripheral nerve and subchondral bone disorders, with a particular focus on Osteoarthritis. He has authored more than 170 scientific publications, received nearly 10,000 academic citations, holds an h-index of 44, has contributed to around ten international patents, and has been included in Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking.
Throughout his career, Dr Sánchez has combined clinical practice, research and innovation with a strong commitment to Medical Education and knowledge transfer. Among his major distinctions are Spain’s National Award for Arts and Sciences Applied to Sport, presented by His Majesty the King, and the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award at the TOBI Orthobiologic Symposium in the United States.
