Patients in their 40s and early 50s with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) often fall into a ‘treatment gap’ – too severe for basic conservative care, yet too young or active for joint arthroplasty. This presentation explores how polyacrylamide hydrogel (Arthrosamid) may help bridge this divide, shifting the clinical focus away from knee OA as a homogenous entity toward distinct individual phenotypes.

Drawing on current clinical evidence and real-world experience, we will discuss how to guide patient selection by identifying optimal responder characteristics and how to manage high expectations by framing success around quality-of-life improvements. The session will also explore key clinical considerations surrounding this intervention, including common concerns regarding the permanent, non-biodegradable nature of the hydrogel.

Attendees will gain a pragmatic, balanced framework to guide appropriate decision-making for this medical intervention while recognising the clear boundaries where structural surgical referral remains the correct path.

Speakers

Dr Craig Sheridan

Dr Craig Sheridan is a Consultant in Musculoskeletal, Sport and Exercise Medicine, originally training in general practice before completing specialist training in the East of England. He works for UK Defence Medical Services where he holds a substantive consultant post within the military rehabilitation centre in Colchester and Honington, providing specialist sport and musculoskeletal injury care to military personnel and new recruits. In this role he has developed a keen interest in the management of knee arthritis in the active population.

Additionally, Dr Sheridan works for Fortius Clinic and Pure Sports Medicine in London and runs a regular visiting sports and MSK injury clinic in the Channel Islands. He has worked with numerous sporting teams and organisations including Ipswich Town Football Club and The English Football Association. He enjoys providing medical education having formally been a GP clinical educator and retaining an active role within the Advanced Trauma Medical Management in Football (ATMMIF) faculty.
