About this Talk

Osteoarthritis affects the whole joint, and the subchondral bone plays a key role in how the disease progresses and in the pain patients feel. Intra-articular treatments, however, do not reach the subchondral bone.
In this talk, Dr Guadilla will explain why the subchondral bone is a therapeutic target and present the technique of intraosseous injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), usually combined with an intra-articular injection, in the knee and in other joints.
He will cover patient selection, the procedure in each joint, the clinical results and his practical experience, especially in severe osteoarthritis and in patients who have not responded to other treatments.

Dr Jorge Guadilla Arsuaga

Dr Jorge Guadilla is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in arthroscopic surgery, regenerative medicine and orthobiologics, and Co-Medical Director of Hospital MiKS in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, alongside Dr Mikel Sánchez. After graduating from the University of the Basque Country, he trained in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology in Vitoria-Gasteiz, including a period at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. A keen sportsman himself, he was drawn to orthopaedics by its close links with sport and sports injuries.

He joined Dr Sánchez's team in 2004 and, for over two decades, has combined clinical practice with experimental and clinical research on platelet-rich plasma and other biological therapies for musculoskeletal conditions. He has performed intraosseous infiltrations since the technique was first developed by Dr Sánchez and has extensive clinical experience in its use. He has co-authored 32 scientific publications with nearly 800 citations. His main clinical interest is lower-limb pathology, particularly the hip, and he co-founded the team's Hip Unit in 2009.

Dr Guadilla has been an invited speaker at national and international meetings, including the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) congresses, on arthroscopy and biological therapies. He is a member of the Spanish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SECOT) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
